Considering ignoring the Audit Qualification? It could be far more important than you realise…

At the last ICAEW Student Council meeting, Chris P (ICAEW employer training) gave us a useful update regarding the online training file and particularly the Audit Qualification (AQ).

The key message was about the importance of submitting experience to the AQ during training. Once upon a time, all of your experience could be measured and submitted retrospectively.  Now experience has to be banked during your training contract or it will be lost after you qualify.  The importance of accurate information was also stressed as this information can be accessed by the regulators and will be verified  If the full experience hours are not met during training, the experience can be banked so that it is not lost.

Even if you have no long term interest in audit, the AQ can still be important to you.  Responsible Individuals (RIs) must hold a majority of the voting rights within a Registered Auditor and to be a RI you need the AQ.  This means particularly at smaller accountancy firms, not having the AQ could limit your chances of promotion to partner even if you’re not working in audit!

For more information about the AQ:

The Ageas Bowl

SCASS Ball 2014

The annual SCASS Ball takes place at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday 5 April 2014.  Themed around the 1920s, The Great Scassby will see over 150 students from the area get together for a fun-filled evening featuring a three-course dinner, DJ, live band and other entertainment.

SCASS Ball 2014The evening is generously sponsored by CMA Financial Recruitment, one of the society’s strongest supporters, and there will be a charity raffle in aid of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance with some incredible prizes up-for-grabs.

The event starts from 7pm in the Mike Channon Suite and will finish at approximately 1am.  Guests are encouraged to come in themed clothing, however we realise this won’t be possible in which case the dress code is black tie.

We look forward to seeing as many students there as possible for a fantastic evening which will live long in the memory.

Need a helping hand?

As ‘busy season’ or even ‘busy year’ for some of you is now well and truly under way we have decided to host in connection with SOSCA, a Stress Management Workshop on Thursday 20th February at Kaplan, Southampton from 6.30 – 8.15pm.

There will be food and drinks available to all attendees. Places are limited so if you wish to attend please email Poorvi Shah on PShah6 [at]

The organisation running the course are CABA, experts in providing workshops in dealing with pressure. You will be able to put forward any queries you may have as well get some insight on how to cope when things start to get a bit crazy!

SCASS & YCAG Wine Tasting

Coming up in a few weeks we have the first event of 2014 – the SCASS & YCAG Wine Tasting!  Timed to celebrate the release of the December exam results, this event is taking place for a third consecutive year and hopes to be bigger and better than before.  The event provides everyone with an opportunity to celebrate exam successes, start a night out with your colleagues, network with other firms and drink a LOT of wine!  Wines of different colours, from different countries and made from different grapes will be available as well as some hot and cold buffet food.  This year the event will also take place underground in vault that was once used as a large wine cellar so there will be added atmosphere and history as well.

SCASS & YCAG Wine TastingFurther to all this, the event provides a great opportunity to further foster the links between SCASS and YCAG (Young Chartered Accountants Group) so that students know that there is a life beyond SCASS.  YCAG is a part of SOSCA (ICAEW’s district society) and focuses on those people who are up to 10 years post-qualified in a similar way to how SCASS benefits those who are in their training contracts.  They put on a range of events designed to aid networking with other professions, each other and provide access to other support such as CPD through SOSCA.

If you are interested in fielding a team please email me on Don’t worry if you haven’t played in years- most of us haven’t!

If you don’t quite have 7 players, please do contact me anyway as we have a few firms who don’t quite have enough so I can put people together to make teams.

Please could you return all team names and numbers to me by Monday 14th October at the latest so I can organise the teams and fixtures.

Both males and females are welcome to join, there will be a 1 goal advantage per male player to the opposition for each man on the team.

Games will last 20 minutes- 10 mins each way- with a short 5 min break in the middle for any last minute team tactics (and to get your breath back!)

We have got some great referees from Southampton University and they are giving us their time for free so please go easy on them 🙂

Any questions do get in touch!
